Champions Hibernians seek derby win to take sole leadership

Champions Hibernians will be all out to claim the three points on Sunday as they face neighbours Tarxien Rainbows in one of the two matches in programme at the National Stadium.

Following defeats to Balzan and Sliema Wanderers respectively, Valletta and Mosta lost their hundred percent record and a win for the Paolites on Sunday would give them sole leadership. Hibs were held in a draw by Balzan in their first outing but then defeated Floriana 2-1 and Naxxar Lions 4-1.

But their task is no easy one considering Tarxien’s strong start as they are one of just three teams, along with Hibs and Balzan, who are still unbeaten. They defeated Sliema Wanderers 2-0 in their first outing and then held Birkirkara and Balzan in draws.

Former Tarxien striker Denni is ruled out for Hibernians as he serves a two-match ban but Jackson Lima and goalkeeper Jurgen Borg should be back.

Meanwhile in the first match, Floriana hope to continue where they had left last week with a win over Naxxar Lions.

The Greens suffered defeats to Mosta and Hibs in their first two games but bounced back with a 3-0 win over Qormi. Naxxar, on the other hand, are still seeking their first points after losing to Birkirkara, Balzan and Hibernians.
