Eight teams reach FA Trophy third round

Two First Division sides, four from the Second Division, one from the Third Division and anoher from Gozo reached the third round of the FA Trophy with the only surprise results being Xewkija Tigers’ win over Marsa and St. Venera Lightnings’ win over Birzebbuga St. Peter’s.

A goal by Justin Cilia on the 81st minute gave Second Division side Zejtun Corinthians a narrow win over neighbours Marsaxlokk from Division 3 at the Centenary Stadium

First Division side Melita defeated Second Division side Mgarr United 3-1. Francois Guihard put the Amateurs ahead on the 9th and the same player doubled the score on the half-hour. Nicholas Micallef made it 3-0 on the 46th and Kenneth Aquilina scored a consolation goal for Mgarr on the 54th.

First Division side Fgura United defeated Second Division side Siggiewi 3-0 at the Charles Abela Stadium. Dejan Vukovic put Fgura ahead four minutes from the end of the first half. Steven Sandoval doubled the score on the 47th and added another thirteen minutes from time.

Third Division side Sta. Venera Lightnings came from behind to beat second Division side Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 2-1. Andrea Cutajar put Birzebbuga ahead on the 27th, Dylan Mercieca levelled matters on the 59th and Ryan Cauchi notched the winner on the 78th.

Second Division side Kirkop United beat Mtarfa from Division 3 by the odd goal in five. Glenn Brincat gave Kirkop a two-goal lead with goals on the 8th and 24th but Mtarfa repleid with a brace by Omar Smeir on the 50th and 64th. However Michael Zammit managed to strike for Kirkop on the 67th.

Gozitan champions Xewkija Tigers defeated Second Division leaders Marsa 4-2 in another match at the Sirens Stadium.

Gharghur defeated Zurrieq 5-4 on penalties after the clash between the two Second Division sides at the Luxol Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw at tehe end of the ninety minutes and extra-time.

In another match at the Luxol Stadium, Second Division side Swieqi United beat Third Division side Ta’ Xbiex 2-1. Bruno Menezes gave Swieqi the lead on the 11th minute but Andrew Xuereb equalised twelve minutes later. However two minutes in the second half, Glendon Refalo made it 2-1 for Billy Mock’s side.
