FA Trophy: Mqabba beat Victoria Hotspurs in dramatic eight-goal thriller

Mqabba defeated Gozitan side Victoria Hotspurs 5-3 in a highly-entertaining game at the Sirens Stadium as the final eight matches from the second round of the FA Trophy were played on Sunday.

William Barbosa put the Hotspurs ahead on the 37th and James Tabone doubled the score on the 52nd. Ten minutes later, Joseph Borg pulled one back for Mqabba and five minutes later, Junior Elijah Obagbemiro levelled matters. Josef Buttigieg made it 3-2 for the Hotspurs on the 68th. However Mqabba staged another great comeback as Joseph Borg levelled matters on the 70th, Stephane Manasse Sylla made it 4-3 on the 87th and two minues in added time, Sylla sealed the issue with a fifth goal.

Vittoriosa Stars defeated Gozitan side Kercem Ajax 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium. Michael Camilleri put Vittoriosa ahead on the 21st and Milijan Milivojev doubled the score on the 45th.

Lija Athletic defeated Second Division side Mellieha 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Adrian Caruana put Lija ahead two minutes before half-time and Ige Abdullahi Adeshina doubled the score on the 58th. Wayne Borg St John scored a consolation goal for Mellieha eight minutes from time.

St. George’s registered a narrow 1-0 win over Hamrun Spartans in a clash between two First Division sides at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Benjamin Dalatu Ayuba scored the all-important goal on the 38th minute.

Pietà Hotspurs defeated Senglea Athletic 2-1 in another clash between two First Division sides at the Centenary Stadium. Christian Grech managed to break the deadlock for Pietà on the 72nd and eight minutes later, James Scicluna doubled the score. Five minutes in added time, Terence Scerri reduced the gap for Senglea.

Second Division side Zabbar St. Patrick defeated Gozitan side Nadur Youngsters 6-1 at the Sirens Stadium. Jean Claude Cesare put Zabbar ahead on the 15th and Julio Cesar Sousa Martins Silva doubled the score on the 39th. Shawn Cesare increased the lead on the 69th and eight minutes later, Dylan Micallef added another. Dillon Pace made it 5-0 on the 90th with Nadur reducing the gap through Daniel Portelli. However one minute from time, Justin Felice made it 6-1 for St. Patrick.

Gozitan side Ghajnsielem defeated Third Division side Dingli Swallows 2-1 after extra-time at the Gozo Stadium. Dhonatan Santos Da Hora put the Blacks ahead on the 19th but Luke Galea forced extra-time with the equaliser two minutes from time. Four minutes in the second half of extra-time, Kenneth Mercieca notched the winner for Ghajnsielem.

In a clash between two Gozitan sides at the Gozo Stadium, St. Laurence Spurs defeated SK Victoria Wanderers 4-2. Dennis Di Maio put the Spurs ahead on the 18th but Simon Gatt equalised on the 36th. Sunday Baala made it 2-1 for St. Laurence and although Antonio Pannone levelled matters on the 56th, the Spurs regained the lead thanks to a Sunday Baala penalty on the 61st and the same played sealed the issue with another goal on the 77th.

These eight teams join Fgura United, Gzira United, Melita, Rabat Ajax, San Gwann, Zebbug Rangers from Division 1; Gharghur, Kirkop United, Swieqi United, Zejtun Corinthians from Division 2; St. Venera Lightnings from Division 3 and Gozitan champions Xewkija Tigers in the third round of the competition together with the fourteen Premier League clubs.
