BOV Division 1: Top-of-the-table clash ends in goalless draw

Gzira United maintained a five-point lead over Hamrun Spartans in the BOV First Division as the two teams shared the spoils in a goalless draw in a top-of-the-table clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Friday.

The Spartans went close with attempts by Jake Grech and Glenn Azzopardi during the first half with the Maroons replying through a Luca Martinelli effort. After the break, Saturday Nanapere twice went close to putting Hamrun ahead but Louis Rene Zome had a good opportunity for Gzira. Later in the game, Hamrun had good attempts by Haruna Garba and Jake Grech.

Senglea Athletic moved to just one point behind the Spartans as they beat San Gwann 3-1. Senglea had a perfect start, taking the lead through Duncan Pisani on the 2nd minute and Christian Cassar doubled the score on the 4th. Audgustine James Obaje made it 3-0 on the 12th. Felix Udoh Okon scored a consolation goal for San Gwann fifteen minutes from time.

Meanwhile in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Fgura United returned to winning ways as they defeated Mqabba 2-0. Steven Sandoval Escobar put Fgura ahead four minutes in the second half and Francisco Arriagada Mella doubled the score on the 56th.

Gzira lead the way with 16 points, followed by Hamrun on 11, Senglea and Zebbug 10, Lija and Melita 9, Vittoriosa, Pietà, Rabat and Fgura 7, San Gwann 5, St. George’s 4, Gudja 3 and Mqabba 2.
