Schools’ Football Tournament is back after a 15-year break

The Malta Football Association through its Grassroots Department within the Technical Centre in collaboration with the Sport Promotion Unit (SPU) within SportMalta and the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education (DQSE) are reviving the once popular Schools’ Football Tournament.

This 11-a side event, held for Form 3s and Form 4s kicked off this week with the following participation; Gozo College Boys’ Secondary, St. Theresa College St. Venera Boys’ Secondary, St. Clare College Pembroke and Sliema Boys’ Secondary Schools, St. Benedict College Boys’ Secondary, San Gorg Preca College Hamrun Boys’ Secondary, St. Thomas More College Hamrun Boys’ Secondary, St. Margaret College Verdala Boys’ Secondary and the National Sport School.

State schools are competing in two groups on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th November with the top two schools in the groups qualifying for the semi-finals on Friday. The top two state schools’ teams will then be joined by the top two teams from the non-state schools in the Finals on the 9th of May 2016.

The tournament is being held at premises provided by Mellieha SC, Sliema Wanderers FC and Mosta FC seeing over 300 boys aged 13 to 15.

The MFA Technical Centre is pleased to yet again collaborate with the SPU and DQSE in organising a wonderful experience to the children and introducing competitive football in schools. MFA referees were also engaged in supervising the games and imbue in the youngsters a sense of competition and fair play.

The MFA would again like to express its satisfaction and thank all sponsors of the MFA School Activities for their material assistance, which also help to make this new tournament a success. The main sponsors are TeamSport and GSD Marketing Ltd.. Teamsport will assist the MFA in distributing sports equipment to schools, as well as donating participants a newly-designed bag whilst the other sponsors GSD Marketing Ltd., are providing Kristal water to all the participants.

The MFA wishes to thank the SPU, DQSE, all the participants from several schools, the nurseries, organisers and sponsors for making the tournament an unqualified success. The MFA and Educational entities are looking forward in making this another annual event for the local schools.
