Birkirkara appoint Drazen Besek as their new coach

Birkirkara FC have appointed Croat Drazen Besek as their new coach until the end of the season. He replaces Giovanni Tedesco who was sacked earlier this month and was temporarily replaced by his assistant Josef Mansueto for the last two league games.

Besek started his coaching career as a player-coach with Varteks. He was appointed as coach of Čakovec and later of Slaven Belupo before re-joining Varteks. Besek had then a short spell with Zagłębie Lubin in Poland but moved to Slovenia where he led Drava Ptuj. Following another spell with Varteks, Besek moved to China where he was appointed as assistant coach to Miroslav Blažević at Shanghai Shenhua and later the China Under-23 national team. In 2011, he took over as coach at Shanghai Shenhua but at the end of the season, he returned to Croatia where he had a short spell with NK Zagreb. In 2013, he moved back to China and coached Hunan Billows, Wuhan Zall and Tianjin Songjiang. Earlier this year, he had a short spell with Osijek.

Josef Mansueto will be stay on as assistant to Besek while Darko Stanekovic is the new goalkeeper’s coach and Nicholas Jaro the new physical trainer.

Birkirkara are currently joint-third with Floriana, five points behind leaders Valletta.
