Dramatic win for Valletta over neighbours Floriana

Leaders Valletta came back from one goal down to beat eternal rivals Floriana 2-1, therefore making sure of retaining sole leadership.

The Greens forged ahead during the first half and the Citizens seemed unable to react but after the break, Paul Zammit’s side turned defeat into victory to move back on track after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Tarxien Rainbows last week.

Henry Bonello and Michael Mifsud were named in the starting line-up for Valletta while Matthew Calleja Cremona was back in goal for Floriana.

Floriana took the lead on the 19th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Matteo Picciollo was brought down inside the area by Claudio Pani and from the penalty spot, Mauricio Villa converted.

Matteo Picciollo was unlucky to hit the crossbar with a shot from outside the area on the 53rd and following a corner by Steve Pisani, Mauricio Villa hit the crossbar once again with a close-range header two minutes later.

Valletta levelled matters on the 68th when Jhonnattann Benites da Conceicao exchanged the ball with Roderick Briffa who served him with an intelligent passs and the Brazilian striker managed to slot the ball past Calleja Cremona from a close angle on the left.

The Citizens notched the winner four minutes from time when off a cross from the right by Roderick Briffa, Jhonnattann headed the ball down and substitute Uchenna Calistus Umeh slammed the ball home.
