Eighth win in a row for Balzan

Balzan maintained the pressure on leaders Valletta as they registered an eight consecutive win, defeating Mosta 3-0 at the Hibernians Stadium.

For Mosta, this was the third defeat in four matches. They have now won just one out of the last ten matches.

Samir Arab and Pedrinho were missing for Balzan as they were serving a one-match ban but Elkin Serrano was back after missing the last match. Mosta, on the other hand, welcomed back Onyekachi Okonkwo and Dyson Falzon but lacked Jonas Ekani Rodriguez.

Balzan managed to take the lead o the 34th minute when off a cross from the left by Alfred Effiong, Aleksandar Vujacic headed the ball down for Lydon Micallef who hit low past goalkeeper Omar Borg.

Two minutes from the end of the first half, Balzan doubled the score thanks to Aleksandar Vujacic who placed the ball at the back of the net from close range after an Alfred Effiong effort was partially saved by the Mosta custodian.

Eight minutes in the second half, Paul Fenech made it 3-0 with a powerful drive from well outside the area which gave goalkeeper Omar Borg no chance.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows returned to winning ways thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over Naxxar Lions.

The Rainbows who had won just one game of their last six matches are still sixth but move further away from the bottom six. Naxxar, on the other hand, suffer a second consecutive defeat to stay third from bottom.

Missing for Tarxien were Luke Montebello, Carlos Menendez Hevia and Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos. Ryan Grech, on the other hand, returned for Naxxar.

Ayrton Azzopardi went close to putting Naxxar ahead on the 6th minute but his attempt hit the woodwork. However five minutes from the end of the first half, he was not to be denied when he received a through pass by Triston Caruana and lobbed the ball over the Naxxar goalkeeper to put Tarxien 1-0 ahead.

Four minutes later, Tarxien doubled the score when Alex da Paixao Alves concluded a solo effort by dribbling past the Naxxar defence and hitting past Gallinetta from a close angle.

The Rainbows sealed the issue with a third goal ten minutes from time thanks to a rising shot by Alex Nilsson which gave the Naxxar goalkeeper no chance.
