BOV Division 1: Gzira held in a draw, Gudja relegated

Leaders Gzira United extended their positive run in the BOV First Division but dropped two important points in a 2-2 draw with Vittoriosa Stars on Sunday. The Maroons now lead by just one point over Hamrun Spartans.

Goals by Louis Rene Zome on the 19th and just before half-time put Gzira two goals ahead but the Stars made a good comeback in the second half thanks to a brace by Duncan Pisani on the 57th and 83rd.

Third-placed Senglea Athletic registered a third consecutive win to move seven points clear of Pietà Hotspurs as they defeated Gudja United 5-0 at the Centenary Stadium to condemn Gudja to playing in Division 2 next season.
Aud-Gustine James Obaje put Senglea ahead on the 8th and a penalty by the same player doubled the score on the 33rd. Ryan Dalli made it 3-0 on the 56th and eight minutes later, Emiliano Lattes added another before Obaje scored a fifth twelve minutes from time.

The Hotspurs suffered a humiliating 0-7 defeat to Mqabba at the Centenary Stadium. Arilson Mello da Silva put Mqabba ahead on the 20th and Paul Chimezie doubled the score on the 34th. Arilson made it 3-0 twelve minutes in the second half and Chimezie added another two minutes later. Arilson completed a hat-trick on the 65th. Rodney Caruana increased the lead further on the 78th before an own goal two minutes from time provided Mqabba the seventh goal.

Zebbug Rangers returned to winning ways as they beat Lija Athletic 4-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium to move seventh.

Angelo Catania scored twice on the 17th and 34th to put Zebbug two goals ahead an own goal six minutes in the second half increased the lead further before Diego Fernando Pereira made it 4-0 on the 77th. Aiden Galea scored a consolation goal for Lija one minutes in added time.

Gzira lead the way with 51 points, followed by Hamrun on 50, Senglea 41, Pietà 34, Mqabba 32, Lija 30, Zebbug 28, Vittoriosa 27, Rabat and Fgura 26, Melita 25, St. George’s 18, San Gwann 17 and Gudja 8.
