BOV Division 1: San Gwann claim precious points in direct clash against relegation

San Gwann registered a most comfortable 5-1 win over St. George’s in a direct clash against relegation in one of the four BOV First Division matches in programme on Sunday.

At the Centenary Stadium, Nezar Abouhaisa put San Gwann ahead on the 31st minute and Ryan Zammit doubled the score deep into stoppage time. Two minutes in the second half, Abouhaiza added another but Kenneth Abela reduced the gap for St. George’s on the 56th. However Jan Tanti increased the lead on the 65th and David Henry added another on the 76th.

Second-placed Hamrun Spartans failed to keep the pace with leaders Gzira United as they were held in a goalless draw at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Third-placed Senglea Athletic registered a fourth consecutive win to stay seven points clear of fourth-placed Pietà as they beat Fgura United 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium. Aud-Gustine James Obaje was the hero for Senglea with a goal on the 6th minute and another on the 93rd.

After losing four of the previous five matches, Pietà Hotspurs returned to winning ways as they defeated Melita 4-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. For Melita, this was the fourth defeat in five matches. Kyle Cesare converted a penalty on the 41st minute to put the Hotspurs ahead and John Roland Emeka scored three on the 58th, 75th and 82nd.

Gzira lead the way with 54 points, followed by Hamrun on 51, Senglea 44, Pietà 37, Mqabba 32, Lija and Zebbug 31, Vittoriosa 27, Rabat and Fgura 26, Melita 25, San Gwann 20, St. George’s 18 and Gudja 8.
