BOV Division 1: Gzira United promoted

Gzira United will be making their return to the top division after over three decades as they earned the point they needed to secure promotion thanks to a goalless draw with Senglea Athetic at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in one of the four BOV First Division matches in programme on Sunday. Thanks to this draw, Senglea move five points ahead of Pietà Hotspurs in the battle for the play-off spot.

Hamrun Spartans moved to just one point away from promotion as they came from behind to beat Mqabba 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium. A win which puts them just one point behind the Maroons. Arilson Mello da Silva put Mqabba ahead on the 14th but Jake Grech equalised on the 66th and Saturday Nanapere notched the winner on the 90th.

Lija Athletic beat San Gwann 2-0 at the Centenary Stadium. A defeat which leaves San Gwann six points behind Melita and Fgura. McAllister Clinch gave Lija the lead on the 31st and one minute in the second half, Erjon Beu doubled the score.

Rabat Ajax moved an important step towards securing their First Division status after defeating bottom-placed Gudja United 2-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Chris Vella put Rabat ahead on the 33rd and Adam Smeir doubled the lead five minutes from time.

Gzira lead the way with 55 points, followed by Hamrun on 54, Senglea 45, Pietà 40, Lija 34, Vittoriosa 33, Mqabba and Zebbug 32, Rabat 29, Fgura and Melita 26, San Gwann 20, St. George’s 18 and Gudja 8.
