Valletta seek positive result in Faroe Islands

Champions Valletta will be aiming for a positive result as they face B36 Tórshavn in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round at the Gundadalur Stadion in Tórshavn on Tuesday, kick-off at 19:00.

Following the 1-0 win in the first leg, courtesy of a Federico Falcone strike on the 69th minute, the Citizens need a draw from the game to make it to the next round where they would be facing FK Crvena zvezda (Red Star Belgrade). Even a 1-2 or 2-3 defeat would see Valletta through.

Valletta qualified for a further round in UEFA competitions on five occasions. They eliminated Barry Town of Wales with an aggregate score of 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League in 1999, Keflavik of Iceland 5-2 in the Europa League in 2009, Tre Fiori of San Marino 5-1 in the Champions League in 2011, Lusitanos of Andorra 9-0 in the Champions League in 2012 and Fiorita of San Marino 4-0 in the Europa League in 2013.

Coach Paul Zammit is not expected to make any changes to the team following a good performance in the first leg. He is therefore set to start with Henry Bonello in goal, Jonathan Caruana, Juan Cruz Gill and Ian Azzopardi in defence Romeu Romao and Leandro Aguirre on the flanks, Roderick Briffa, Claudio Pani and Llywelyn Cremona in midfield with Jhonnattann and Federico Falcone in attack.

B36 had eliminated IBV of Iceland with a 3-2 aggregate score in 2005 and one year later, they eliminated Birkirkara from the UEFA Champions League following a 3-0 win in Malta and a 2-2 draw in Torshavn.
