Qormi FC present their new players

qormiFirst Division side Qormi FC presented new coach Brian Spiteri and their new players during a press conference at the Dolmen Resort Hotel, Qawra on Wednesday.

Qormi, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, signed no less than ten players, apart from welcoming back other players who were on loan with other clubs. They signed goalkeeper Daniel Balzan, Dormond Micallef, Dylan Pirotta, Brandon Grech, Wail Rizgalla, Dejan Vukovic, Alan Abela, Michael Camilleri, Mark Barbara and Nigerian striker Lawrence Uchechi Chiedozie. The club is also expected to sign another foreigner before they play their first match this weekend.

Qormi FC president Jesmond Aquilina explained the the club will be trying to establish itself in Division 1 after eight years playing in the top division. He stressed that promotion will only be an objective for the club once the team is strong enough to be promoted and establish itself once again among the elite of local football.

The club went through serious financial difficulties in recent years but the club managed to climb out of the difficult situation and by the end of the season, the players were all paid their dues for last season. Aquilina said that this only possible thanks to the hard work of the committee and thanked his predecessors for what they did for the club. The Qormi president thanked the main sponsors, namely Tumas Group, Centre Park Holdings and Ta’ Dernis Properties and the other sponsors including Neopharma, RCV, Unique Construction and GSL. He said that thanks to these sponsors and several other people and small companies that the club raises the necessary funds.

qormi-fc-presentation2016For the coming season, Qormi FC appointed Brian Spiteri as their new coach. He will be assisted by Joe Gerada as assistant coach and coach of the Youths team. The other members of the technical staff are physical trainer Matthew Psaila, goalkeepers’ coach Joe Cutajar, physiotherapist Kurt Aquilina, team manager Kevin D’Amato and nutritionist Andre Buhagiar.

New coach Brian Spiteri said that his first objective is that he and the players understand each other and although the club will seek a positive start, it should not peak too early during the season in what he considers as the most difficult league on the island.

Meanwhile Victor Camilleri spoke about the Qormi FC Nursery’s objective of being the delivery source for the club. He said that club went through big changes in recent months but the situation is soon coming to normal. Camilleri said that ultimately the youths are coming up from the nursery would find their place in the senior team.
