Valletta, Sliema cross swords in BOV Super Cup final

BOV Premier League champions Valletta and FA Trophy winners Sliema Wanderers cross swords in the BOV Super Cup at the National Stadium on Wednesday, kick-off at 19:00.

The Super Cup traditionally kicks-off the new season but this year’s edition had to be delayed as the National Stadium was not available in August due to the installation of a hybrid turf pitch.

Valletta are the most successful club in the Super Cup, having won it no less than ten times, the last being in 2012. This includes 1990 when Valletta defeated Sliema 3-0 and in 2001 when the Citizens beat the Wanderers 2-1. On the other hand, Sliema won the Super Cup in 1996 after defeating Valletta on penalties and then in 2000 and 2009.

The Citizens are currently third in the BOV Premier League on 30 points while Sliema are fifth on 24. Although Valletta are unbeaten in ten matches, they were held in three draws out of the last four matches. Sliema, on the other hand, are coming from two wins and a draw.

In the two Premier League clashes between the two teams, Valletta emerged as winners twice with an identical 2-1 score.
