BOV Division 1: Leaders Naxxar return to winning ways

Leaders Naxxar Lions returned to winning ways as they defeated Pietà Hotspurs in one of four matches from the BOV First Division on Sunday.

At the Centenary Stadium, Naxxar beat nine-man Pietà 4-0. Angus Buhagiar put Naxxar ahead on the 29th minute while just before half-time, Jurgen Debono doubled the score. Duane Bonnici increased the lead on the 74th and the same player scored a fourth goal in added time.

Marsa collected three precious points as they came from behind to beat Mqabba 3-2 in another match at the Centenary Stadium. Paul Chimezie scored twice on the 27th and 34th to put Mqabba two goals ahead. Two minutes in the second half, Marsa pulled one back thanks to Elland Vella and ten minutes later, Lucky Omeruo levelled matters. Christopher Cutajar notched the winner nine minutes from time.

Despite player for over an hour in ten men, Rabat Ajax rescued a point in a 1-1 draw with Fgura United thanks to a late penalty at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Ebube Okpokwu put Fgura ahead ten minutes in the second half but Joseph Caruana converted a penalty two minutes from time to level matters for Rabat.

Sirens scored three late goals as they defeated Gharghur 4-0 in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. An own goal on the 9th minute put them ahead. Roland Sala doubled the score on the 82nd, Lee Grech made it 3-0 on the 87th and one minute from time, Iro Curmi scored the fourth and final goal.

Naxxar lead the way with 31 points, followed by Qormi on 28, Vittoriosa 25, Lija 24, Senglea 23, Mqabba 22, Pietà 21, Sirens 20, Melita and Marsa 18, Rabat 14, Zebbug 13, Fgura 12 and Gharghur 9.
