Birkirkara crowned BOV Women’s First Division champions

Birkirkara put the seal on the BOV Women’s League title last night after a 7-0 victory over Kirkop United gave them an insurmountable lead at the top of the standings.

It was always a matter of when, not if, Birkirkara would win the championship after opening a 10-point gap on outgoing champions Hibernians before this week’s fixtures.

The Stripes, under the guidance of Shawn Meilak duly completed the job yesterday and did it in convincing fashion.

Kelly Agius Pace (11th), Alishia Sultana (20th) and Stephania Farrugia (36th) gave Birkirkara a 3-0 half-time lead in their game against Kirkop.

Tracy Teuma made it 4-0 on 63 minutes, Farrugia got her second 12 minutes later and Agius Pace did likewise seven minutes from the end.

On the stroke of time, Sarah Urpani, who came on as a substitute, struck Birkirkara’s seventh goal to kickstart the title celebrations.

This is Birkirkara’s sixth women’s league championship as they reclaimed the crown from Hibernians who had won three consecutive titles.

In the other match on Tuesday, Mġarr United held Hibernians to a 3-3 draw in an action-packed match. Hibs had a perfect start as Ruth Steer Chetham put them ahead after just one minute and Ylenia Carabott doubled the score on the 5th. Emma Xuereb made it 3-0 on the 39th but Brenda Borg pulled one back on the 49th, Amber Grech scored a second goal for Mġarr on the hour and two minutes later, Jasmine Vella Turner levelled matters.
