St. Andrews win the Under-17 Knock-Out Final

St. Andrews’ triumphed in the Youth FA Under-17 Knock-Out Competition by beating Valletta 1-0 in a thrilling final to claim the double. Mattia Veselji scored the all-important goal towards the end of the second half to prevent the match from going to extra-time.

Both teams hit the woodwork in the first half, in what was a very balanced and hard fought affair, but fair-play prevailed. The match was played in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Luxol Stadium.

At the end of the match, YFA Vice-President Robert Attard presented the trophy to St. Andrews’ captain to kick-start the celebrations. This match also signalled the end of the 2016/17 YFA season.

St. Andrews also won Section A of the Under-17 League. They ended their commitments on 31 points, four ahead of Valletta. Mosta placed third, followed by Birkirkara, Pietà Hotspurs, San Gwann, Hamrun Spartans and Balzan.

Floriana won Section B, ending their commitments just one point ahead of second-placed Paola Hibernians. Zebbug Rangers finished third followed by Qormi, Melita, Sliema Wanderers, Pembroke Athleta and Kirkop United.

Tarxien Rainbows emerged as winners in Section C, ahead of runners-up Zabbar St. Patrick. Rabat Ajax placed third, followed by Swieqi United, Zejtun Corinthians, Fgura United, Lija/Iklin and Mqabba.

In Section D, Luqa St. Andrew’s claimed the title, ahead of Birzebbuga Windmill. Attard placed third, followed by Msida St. Joseph, Mellieha, Ghaxaq, Mgarr United and Naxxar Lions.

Sirens won Section E, ahead of Gzira United. Marsa placed third, followed by Xghajra Tornados, Mtarfa, Kalkara and Sta.
