Gareth Southgate picks squad for Malta clash

England manager Gareth Southgate has selected 28 players for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia.

There are two new faces included. Nathaniel Chalobah – England’s most-capped youth international – is named in the senior squad for the first time, while Harry Maguire is included after impressing since his summer move to Leicester City. Uncapped Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also steps up from the Under-21 squad.

Danny Welbeck returns to the fray having not appeared since the 3-2 win over Germany in March 2016, but Adam Lallana misses out due to injury.

Missing from the squad is Wayne Rooney who announced on Wednesday that he has played his final game for England after informing Gareth Southgate of his decision on Tuesday evening having been told by the manager that he was in line to be included in his upcoming squad.

“Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out.”
