Hibs, Floriana vie for Super Cup glory

Champions Hibernians will be facing FA Trophy winners Floriana in the final of the BOV Super Cup at the National Stadium on Wednesday, kick-off at 15:00.

Hibernians will be contesting the Super Cup final for the twelfth time, winning it on three occasions – in 1994 after defeating Floriana on penalties, in 2007 when they beat Marsaxlokk 3-1 and 2015 when they beat Birkirkara 2-1. On the other hand, this will be the fourth Super Cup final for the Greens. They won the cup once, in 1993, when they defeated Valletta 4-1. The following season, they lost to Hibernians on penalties and in 2011, they lost 0-3 to Valletta.

Addressing the media on Monday, Hibs coach Mark Miller says playing this mid-week fixture should help his players stay concentrated and having a cup at stake should motivate the players to bounce back from the defeat to Balzan during the weekend.

New Floriana coach Nicolas Chiesa said that after the back-to-back defeats to Valletta and Naxxar Lions, he feels the team bounced back with the comfortable win over Lija which lifted the team’s morale ahead of this final.

In the BOV Premier League, the Greens lie two points ahead of the Paolites with the clash between the two in September ending in a 1-1 draw.
