Balzan could move three points clear should they beat Hamrun Spartans in one of the two BOV Premier League matches in programme at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Following Valletta’s 1-1 draw with Sliema on Friday and Gzira’s 0-2 defeat to Hibernians on Saturday, the Citizens joined Balzan on top and therefore a win for Marko Micovic’s side would mean that they move three points ahead of Valletta and seven ahead of Gzira. Balzan are unbeaten in fourteen matches and registered back-to-back wins over St. Andrews and Sliema in their last two league matches apart from eliminating Naxxar Lions in the FA Trophy, beating them 2-0.

The Spartans were eliminated from the FA Trophy after losing narrowly to Sliema. They are currently eighth in the BOV Premier League following two draws with Hibernians and St. Andrews.

Alex da Paixao Alves is ruled out for Balzan as he serves a one-match ban.

Hamrun held Balzan in a goalless draw in the first round.

Meanwhile in the first match, Birkirkara will be aiming for a sixth consecutive win as they take on Senglea Athletic. The Stripes won their last five matches which saw them climb from ninth to fifth and another win on Sunday would put them in joint-fourth place with Hibernians.

Senglea, on the other hand, won three out of the last four matches and are currently tenth.

In the first round, Birkirkara suffered a 0-1 defeat to Senglea.
