BOV Division 1: San Gwann stun Mqabba

Mqabba suffered a major setback in the battle for promotion as they suffered a shock 1-2 defeat to San Gwann at the Centenary Stadium in one of the four BOV First Division matches in programme on Wednesday. Mqabba therefore stay three points behind Pieta Hotspurs and seven behind leaders Qormi.

Godwin Henshaw put San Gwann ahead on the 22nd minute but Paul Chimezie equalised two minutes from the end of the first half. However Mario Andres Arieta restored the lead for San Gwann on the 75th.

At the Centenary Stadium, Zejtun Corinthians registered a 4-0 win over Sirens. Yessous Camilleri put Zejtun ahead on the 14th minute. Saturday Nanapere doubled the score on the 58th, Adrian Carabott made it 3-0 on the 75th with Adam Smeir adding another ten minutes from time.

Marsa claimed another three precious points in the battle against relegation as they defeated Zabbar St. Patrick 4-2 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Luka Mijic gave Qrendi a two-goal lead as he scored on the 17th and 42nd. Dylan Micallef pulled one back on the 54th but two minutes later, Mark Gauci made it 3-1 two minutes later. Christian Stewart scored a second goal for St. Patrick on the 58th but one minute in added time, Luka Mijic sealed the issue with a fourth goal for Marsa.

Vittoriosa Stars registered a comfortable 4-0 win over Rabat Ajax in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Joseph JoJo Ogunnupe gave Vittoriosa the lead on the 10th minute. Nine minutes later, Takuya Arakawa doubled the score and Francesco Arriagada Mella made it 3-0 seven minutes from the end of the first half. Francisco Arriagada Mella converted a penalty on the 77th for Vittoriosa’s fourth goal.

Qormi lead the way with 44 points, followed by Pieta on 40, Mqabba 37, Zebbug and Zejtun 35, San Gwann 33, Vittoriosa 30, Qrendi 23, Pembroke and Sirens 21, Zabbar 19, Marsa 18, Melita 14 and Rabat 5.
