BOV Women’s League: Birkirkara regain top spot

Two weeks after letting the first place slip from their hands following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hibernians, Birkirkara have regained top spot in the BOV Women’s League after beating Kirkop United 2-0. In fact, the Stripes profited from Hibernians’ goalless stalemate against Mġarr United as they are now one-point ahead of the Paolites, on 40 points.

Despite the three points, the defending champions did not have an easy win against Kirkop as they had to wait until 51 minutes to draw first blood, through Gabriella Zahra. The Stripes put the result to bed when skipper Stephania Farrugia sent the ball into the back of the net ten minutes from time to earn her team their 13th win of the season.

Meanwhile, after earning hard-fought wins in their first couple of outings against Mġarr, the Greens managed to hold Hibs to a 0-0 draw denying the Paolites the chance to maintain the leadership in the league.

In the other game from this section, Raiders (Luxol) were awarded a 3-0 victory over Tarxien Rainbows after the latter failed to honour their league fixture for the second straight time.

Elsewhere, Swieqi United defeated Mosta 3-1 in the only encounter valid from Section B. Rebecca Naudi, Simone Buttigieg and Krista Montfort opened a three-goal lead before Thresa Scicluna pulled one back for the Blues.

Swieqi remain first on 19 points while Mosta managed only one point in throughout the season so far.
