Birkirkara, Mgarr United to contest Women’s Knock-Out final

Champions Birkirkara and runners-up Mgarr United will be contesting the final of the Women’s Knock-Out Competition at the Charles Abela Stadium on Tuesday, kick-off at 20:00.

Mgarr United defeated Hibernians 5-2 after extra-time at the Charles Abela Stadium on Tuesday.

Jade Schembri put the Paolites ahead on the 11th minute but Haley Bugeja equalised on the 18th. Angelique Schembri made it 2-1 for Mgarr five minutes from the end of the first half but one minute from time, Shona Zammit equalised to force extra-time. Mgarr regained the lead seven minutes in the first half of extra-time through substitute Raisa Calleja and the same player increased the lead four minutes later. Haley Bugeja sealed the issue with another goal five minutes in the second half of extra-time.

In the other semi-final, champions Birkirkara found no difficulty in beating Kirkop United 4-0 at the Charles Abela Stadium on Wednesday.

Following a goalless first half, Stephania Farrugia converted a penalty three minutes in the second half. Ylenia Carabott doubled the score on the 54th and seven minutes later, Raina Giusti scored a third goal. Substitute Sarah Urpani made it 4-0 on the 90th.

In the quarter-finals, Mgarr had defeated Mosta 5-0 while Birkirkara beat Swieqi United 3-0.

Meanwhile in the Women’s Under-19 Knock-Out Competition, Hibernians and Mgarr United secured a place in Sunday’s final after winning the two semi-finals.

In the first semi-final, Hibernians defeated Birkirkara 4-0. Chloe Ann Ellul put the Paolites ahead on the 13th minute before captain Kayleigh Chetcuti hit a hat-trick – on the 33rd, 57th and 77th.

In the other semi-final, Mgarr United overcame the stiff challenge offered by Raiders (Luxol) defeating them 8-5 after extra-time. Haley Bugeja opened the score for Mgarr on the 10th minute but Laura Muscat equalised on the 19th. Mgarr regained the lead thanks to captain Mirayah Aquilina on the 22nd with Michela Bonello Ghio equalising a minute later. Haley Bugeja made it 3-2 for Mgarr on the 36th minute but goals by Michela Bonello Ghio on the 44th and Maya Lucia on the 48th put Raiders ahead for the first time. Haley Bugeja levelled matters two minutes later but Laura Muscat restored the lead for Raiders on the 68th to put them 5-4 ahead. However in added time, Haley Bugeja notched the equaliser for Mgarr to force extra-time.

In extra-time, Haley Bugeja scored another three goals – on the 2nd, 12th and 19th minute to place Mgarr in the final.

In the quarter-finals, Mgarr United had defeated Gozo 4-1 while Hibernians beat Zebbug Rangers 8-0
