Andre Schembri signs for Chennaiyin FC in India

Malta international striker Andre Schembri will be moving to India where he will be playing for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League.

Chennaiyin FC is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The club was founded in August 2014 during the inaugural season of the Indian Super League. Chennaiyin won the championship in 2015 and 2017/18 but finished at the bottom of the table last season. Players like Marco Materazzi, Alessandro Nesta, current Hamrun coach Manuele Blasi, Mikael Silvestre and John Arne Riise played for the club throughout its short history.

Throughout his career, Schembri played in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Cyprus and Portugal.

Andre Schembri made his Premier League debut with Hibernians in season 2002/03 but mid-way through season 2004/05, he was transferred to Marsaxlokk. In summer 2007, he moved to Germany to play for Eintracht Braunschweig. Schembri then moved to Carl Zeiss Jena, spending one year before joining Austria Karnten in Austria in summer 2009. However in January, he joined Ferencvaros in Hungary where he spent eighteen months.

In summer 2011, he joined Olympiakos Volou in the Greek Super League but a few months later, he moved to Panionios after Volou were relegated due to match-fixing allegations. In season 2012/13, he moved to Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus and soon established himself as a key player for the club, scoring twenty-three league goals in fifty-eight matches.

In summer 2014, Schembri moved to Germany to join FSV Frankfurt but after a short spell, he returned with Omonia Nicosia where he spent eighteen months. He moved to Portugal to join Boavista in 2016 but the following season, he moved to Apollon Limassol where he spent the last two years.
