Stoppage-time goal sinks Under-19 side in Luxembourg

A goal in stoppage time handed Luxembourg a 1-0 win over Malta in an Under-19 international friendly match at the Stade Communal in Mondercange on Thursday.

Led by coach Winston Muscat, the Maltese youngsters held their own for long stretches but Luxembourg scored a last-gasp winner from a direct free-kick, taken by substitute Peter Remi Jonathans. Only a few minutes earlier, Luxembourg had been denied by Malta goalkeeper Christopher Farrugia who saved a penalty.

On Tuesday, the Malta Under-19 side had defeated Luxembourg in another friendly match 1-0 thanks to a Mattia Veselji penalty. These warm-up games are part of the team’s preparations for their UEFA Under-19 Championship commitments. Between November 13 and 19, the Malta U-19 team will face hosts Italy, Cyprus and Slovakia in the Group 6 qualifiers.
