FA Trophy quarter-finals take centre stage

The FA Trophy quarter-finals takes centre stage this weekend with two matches at the Hibernians Stadium on Saturday and another two matches at the National Stadium on Sunday.

In the first match at the Hibernians Stadium on Saturday, Balzan take on the only surviving side from the BOV First Division, Pieta’ Hotspurs, kick-off at 14:00.

The Hotspurs share eighth place with another two teams on 21 points in the BOV First Division. In their journey to the quarter-finals, they defeated St. George’s 4-1, Mqabba 3-0 and Xewkija Tigers 2-1.

Balzan, on the other hand, are currently seventh in the BOV Premier League on 25 points from nineteen matches. They made it to the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy after defeating San Gwann 3-0 and Santa Lucia 2-0.

In the second match at the Hibernians Stadium, kick-off at 16:15, Valletta take on Gudja United.

Valletta share the top spot with Floriana on 38 points while Gudja share the third place from bottom with Sliema on 21 points.

To reach the FA Trophy quarter-finals, Valletta defeated St. Andrews 4-0 and Sirens 4-1 Gudja, on the other hand, beat Lija Athletic 3-0 and Victoria Hotspurs 3-1.

Gudja could not count on the suspended Imanol Gonzalez Benac.

In the BOV Premier League first round, Valletta had defeated Gudja United 1-0.

In the first match at the National Stadium on Sunday, Hibernians take on Hamrun Spartans, kick-off at 14:00.

Hibs are currently fourth on 34 points while Hamrun share seventh place with Balzan and Mosta on 25 points.

To reach this stage, Hamrun Spartans defeated Tarxien Rainbows 2-1 and Swieqi United 3-1 while Hibernians beat Zejtun Corinthians 3-0 and Pembroke Athleta 4-0.

In the second match at the National Stadium on Sunday, Floriana cross swords with Birkirkara, kick-off at 16:15.

Floriana share the top spot in the BOV Premier League with Valletta while Birkirkara are currently sixth on 30 points, eight points behind the two joint-leaders.

In the previous rounds of the FA Trophy, Birkirkara defeated Nadur Youngsters 1-0 and Mosta 2-1 while Floriana beat Mosta 6-1 and Senglea Athletic 2-0 after extra-time.

Floriana defeated Birkirkara 1-0 in the BOV Premier League first round but the Stripes defeated Floriana 1-0 in the second round.

In the FA Trophy, extra-time will be played if necessary and if the result is still draw at the end of extra-time, penalty kicks shall be taken in accordance with the Laws of the Game.
