Andre Schembri to hang his boots after Indian Super League final

Former Malta international midfielder Andre Schembri announced that he will be retiring after playing the Indian Super League championship final between his club, Chennaiyin, and ATK (Atletico de Kolkata) on Saturday.

The thirty-three year old had joined Chennaiyin in August, helping his side to finish fourth in the regular season. In the play-off semi-finals, they defeated leaders and last season’s runners-up Goa with a 6-5 aggregate score after a 4-1 win at home and 2-4 defeat away from home. Schembri scored five goals in seventeen matches.

Chennayin had won the title in season 2017/18 but finished bottom of the table last season.

Andre Schembri made his Premier League debut with Hibernians in season 2002/03 but mid-way through season 2004/05, he was transferred to Marsaxlokk. In summer 2007, he moved to Germany to play for Eintracht Braunschweig. Schembri then moved to Carl Zeiss Jena, spending one year before joining Austria Karnten in Austria in summer 2009. However in January, he joined Ferencvaros in Hungary where he spent eighteen months.

In summer 2011, he joined Olympiakos Volou in the Greek Super League but a few months later, he moved to Panionios after Volou were relegated due to match-fixing allegations. In season 2012/13, he moved to Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus and soon established himself as a key player for the club, scoring twenty-three league goals in fifty-eight matches.

In summer 2014, Schembri moved to Germany to join FSV Frankfurt but after a short spell, he returned with Omonia Nicosia where he spent eighteen months. He moved to Portugal to join Boavista in 2016 but the following season, he joined Apollon Limassol where he spent two years.

With the Malta national team, Andre Schembri played 95 matches, scoring three goals.
