Darren Abdilla re-appointed Gzira United coach

Gzira United have re-appointed Darren Abdilla as their new coach. This was announced during the club’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday.

Abdilla, who replaces Paul Zammit whose contract was terminated by mutual consent, joins the Maroons as their coach for a third spell. He signed a two-year deal.

Darren Abdilla had joined Gzira United in Division 1 mid-way through season 2014/15, leading the club to third place and the Play-Off spot. The following season, he led the Maroons to promotion to the Premier League after an absence of thirty-four years and the following summer, he signed a new deal as part of the club’s technical staff although he was no longer the head coach. However he was re-appointed as coach a few months later.

Under his leadership, after securing their Premier League status in season 2016/17, they finished third in season 2017/18 to secure a place in the UEFA Europa League. He stepped down in February 2019.

Last summer, he joined Valletta but was sacked by the Citizens in February despite the fact that the club was sharing the top spot with Floriana.

Earlier in his career, he served as coach with St. George’s, Birzebbuga St. Peter’s and assistant coach with Floriana, Hibernians and Valletta, amongst other teams.
