Tough task for Birkirkara girls in Romania

BOV Women’s League champions Birkirkara will be facing FCU Olimpia Cluj of Romania in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League at the Cluj Arena in Cluj-Napoca on Tuesday, kick-off at 14:00.

This year, the format was changed as the Preliminary Round mini-tournaments were replaced by two single-leg knock-out rounds with 40 teams in the First Qualifying Round and 20 teams in the Second Qualifying Round.

It will be a tough match for the team led by Melania Bajada and Jose Borg, considering the strength of the Romanian side.

Olimpia Cluj were founded in 2010 and since then won ten consecutive championships. In the UEFA Women’s Champions League, they reached the round of 16 in 2012/13 and the round of 32 in 2011/12, 2015/16 and 2017/18.

This will be the third time they will be facing a Maltese club. They already met Birkirkara twice, defeating them 8-0 in 2012 and 6-1 in 2018 while in 2014, they beat Hibernians 5-0.
