Stripes extend positive run

Birkirkara moved fourth in the BOV Premier League, four points behind joint-leaders Hamrun Spartans and Sliema Wanderers as they beat Sirens 4-2 in an entertaining match at the Hibernians Stadium on Tuesday.

The Stripes therefore extend their positive run to eight matches with a third win in four matches. Sirens, on the other hand, suffer a second defeat in four matches to remain in tenth place.

Birkirkara took the lead on the 26th minute when off a corner by Alex da Paixao from the left, Oscar Carniello beat goalkeeper David Cassar as he pressed defender Thiago Espindola.

However less than a minute later, Sirens equalised when Samba Tounkara pounced on a header by Claudio Bonanni and rounded the goalkeeper before placing at the back of the net.

The St. Paul’s Bay side took the lead six minutes from the end of the first half when off a Samba Tounakara corner from the right, Wellington de Oliveira slotted the ball past goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone.

However on the 44th, Birkirkara restored equilibrium thanks to Paul Mbong who placed the ball at the back of the net after a Roderick Briffa freekick was partially saved and a Federico Falcone close-range effort was blocked.

The Stripes regained the lead four minutes in the second half when Montebello served Federico Falcone who slammed the ball past goalkeeper David Cassar.

Four minutes in added time, Birkirkara made it 4-2 thanks to Luke Montebello, served by Caio Prado on the left, whose shot was deflected by a defender to end at the back of the net.
