Gilbert Agius set to be appointed Malta Under-21 coach

Gilbert Agius is set to be appointed coach of the Malta Under-21 national team. He would therefore replace Silvio Vella who led the team for the past six years.

A product of Valletta FC, Gilbert Agius Agius has served as assistant coach of Valletta between 2012 and 2014 under Mark Miller and Andre Paus before being appointed as coach in the beginning of season 2014/15. He stepped down from the role in October and then acted as assistant coach with Ivan Zammit, Paul Zammit, Zoran Popovic and Danilo Doncic until April 2019 when he replaced Danilo Doncic in the final part of the season. During season 2019/20, he served as assistant coach with Darren Abdilla and Giovanni Tedesco and this season with Jesmond Zerafa. In December, he took over as interim coach of Valletta before the club appointed Antonio Jose Cardoso Mendes as the new coach.

The qualifying draw for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship will be held in Nyon on Thursday 28 January.
