Futsal: Swieqi United set up final clash with Luxol

Swieqi United secured a place in the final of the FMA Futsal National League as they defeated Valletta Futsal 6-4 on Wednesday. It was a great performance which confirmed their good form of late to book a historic place in the final against current champions Luxol.

It was a hard fought match between two teams that had a positive campaign. Valletta were coming from a defeat to Luxol in Monday’s and had the chance to make up for all this in the encounter against Swieqi. However, the latter had other ideas and with Colombian duo Riano Garcia and Pardo Umana in fine form, these inspired their team for the final victory.

After finding themselves 5-1 behind, Valletta made a fierce reaction but it was too late in the day. They also had George Frendo and Camilo Gomez sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Swieqi surged ahead through Pardo Umana with the same player scoring his second goal from the second penalty mark. Meanwhile Riano Garcia scored Swieqi’s third goal before half-time.

In the second half, Valletta were better and they reduced the score thanks to substitute Shawn Darmanin who tapped in off a Zvezdan Vukovic pass.

Despite this goal, Swieqi stayed focused and it was Michael Borg who scored a picture grounder to surprise the Valletta keeper. No sooner it was 5-1 with Karl Sciortino scoring from close range.

Valletta made a fierce reaction and the last second were dramatic after they scored three more times to make it 5-4 through a Ryan Gatt brace and another goal by Camilo Gomez.

With Valletta finishing the game with four players after Camilo’s sending off, Swieqi sealed their qualification with another goal by Michael Borg who completed a personal brace.

Swieqi play the final of the FMA Futsal National League to be played on Friday at 20:45 at the National Sports School in Pembroke against Luxol St Andrews.
