The appeal by Hamrun Spartans against the decision by UEFA Appeals Body which had declared the club as ineligible to participate in the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League was not upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

Therefore Hibernians will be participating in the UEFA Champions League where they will be facing Flora Tallinn of Estonia while Gzira United, Birkirkara and Mosta will take part in the new UEFA Europa Conference League where they will be facing Sant Julia of Andorra, La Fiorita of San Marino and Spartak Trnava of Slovakia respectively..

The Member Clubs Licensing Board of the Malta Football Association had originally granted the Spartans the UEFA licence after they met the licensing criteria established by UEFA. However following a report by an independent UEFA Ethics Officer, the UEFA Appeals Body declared the club ineligible following a case when the club was found guilty of match-fixing in 2012/13.
