National Amateur Cup: Zurrieq, Ta’ Xbiex leave it till late

Ta’ Xbiex, Sta. Venera Lightnings, Zurrieq and Mellieha joined Marsaskala, Kalkara United, Zabbar St. Patrick and Xghajra Tornados in the quarter-finals of the National Amateur Cup 2021/22 as the remaining matches from the Round of 16 were played on Sunday.

Three goals in the final twelve minutes handed Zurrieq a 3-0 win over Ghaxaq at the Luxol Stadium.

Andre Joe Cutajar put Zurrieq ahead on the 78th and a brace by Timothy Thomas on the 84th and the 86th sealed the issue.

On the other hand, a goal by substitute Johann Grech eight minutes from time handed Ta’ Xbiex a narrow win over Gharghur in another match at the Luxol Stadium.

At the Sirens Stadium, Sta. Venera Lightnings defeated Gozitan Second Division side 3-2 after extra-time.

Tyrone Grech put the Lightnings ahead on the 7th minute and an own goal by Joseph Attard doubled the score. However one minute in the second half, Gabriel Debrincat reduced the gap and Steve Farrugia equalised on the 77th. But two minutes in added time at the end of the first half of extra-time, Malcolm Calleja notched the winner.

Mellieha defeated Dingli Swallows 3-1 in another match at the Sirens Stadium.

Andie Sammut handed Mellieha the lead on the 9th minute but Dario Borg equalised on the 77th. However, after the game was interrupted for around twenty minutes due to a serious injury sustained by a Mellieha player, Miguel Camilleri scored twenty minutes in added time and then the same player added another six minutes later.

One comment

  1. Mellieha didn’t need any extra-time to defeat Dingli. What happened is that because of a foul which sent a Mellieha Player to hospital, the game stopped for more than 15 minutes which were then added as injury time
