Hibernians beat Hamrun to move five points clear

Leaders Hibernians moved five points clear after defeating champions Hamrun Spartans 1-0 in this weekend’s big match at the National Stadium on Sunday.

The Paolites therefore maintained their unbeaten record to move five points ahead of second-placed Floriana and six ahead of Balzan and Birkirkara. Hamrun remain in sixth place, nine points behind the Paolites.

Hibernians took the lead on the 21st minute thanks to a great goal by Jake Grech whose powerful drive from outside the area ended in the top left corner.

Five minutes from the end of the first half, Faissal El Bakhtaoui was sent off for Hamrun Spartans leaving his side in ten men following an incident with Dunstan Vella.

In added time, Gabri Izquier missed an excellent opportunity to double the score, hitting wide when served by Thaylor Aldama, hitting high

Nine minutes in the second half, a cross shot from the right by Thaylor Aldama was neutralised by Bonello and four minutes later, Degabriele, served by Grech hit wide from an ideal position. 

One minute from time, the Spartans almost notched the equaliser but Soufiane Lagzir’s powerful shot from outside the area hit the crossbar. Five minutes in added time, Lagzir had a fierce shot from outside the area ending just wide.
