Gzira United granted permission to seek damages in court

Gzira United were granted permission to seek damages from Sirens FC in court by the MFA Appeals Board over alleged irregularities in the application of a UEFA licence for season 2020/21.

In a statement, the Malta Football Association said “Recourse to a tribunal external to the Association will be conceded to Gzira United FC following a request filed before the Appeals Board which was upheld. This is the first time under a new procedure introduced as part of the Statutory Reform approved last July through which such requests are decided upon by the highest independent body.”

“This decision was announced by the Appeals Board today following two sittings held on the 17th and the 23rd of November 2021.”

“Gzira United FC claim that they have been deprived of the opportunity to participate in UEFA club competitions in Season 2020/21 due to an alleged deficiency in documentation which had been submitted by Sirens FC, which deficiency became known after actual participation of Sirens FC. “

“The Board assessed that the Association could not provide an adequate remedy through its bodies in this case.”

Meanwhile in a statement, Sirens FC condemned this decision.

“Sirens FC has taken note of the decision by the MFA appeals board. Today’s decision is an admission by the MFA judicial bodies that its boards are inadequate and do not offer appropriate decisions. Sirens FC strongly disagrees with this.”

“Irrespective of this, Sirens FC will show within any forum that it has acted with the highest standards of good faith and in accordance with rules and regulations. In addition, the decision creates a dangerous precedent and creates a serious threat to all clubs and club officials, who are now exposed to litigation, even if such is frivolous and vexatious, as is this case under review.”
