Rivals Valletta, Hamrun Spartans cross swords in clash for second place

Valletta will be aiming to keep the pace with leaders Hibernians with a win as they take on Hamrun Spartans in one of the two BOV Premier League matches in programme on Monday.

Two points separate the two teams with Valletta lying in second place on 20 points together with Birkirkara and Floriana while Hamrun Spartans are currently fifth on 18. After claiming maximum points from the previous three matches, including the protest over the match against Sliema, Valletta were held in a goalless draw by Birkirkara last week. On the other hand, after a most inconsistent phase, the Spartans won four out of the last five matches, losing only to Hibernians.

The Citizens will be without the influential Ivan Curjuric who serves a one-match ban.

In the first round, Valletta defeated Hamrun 2-1.

Meanwhile in the first match at the Natonal Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Sirens take on Gudja United.

Sirens are currently eighth on 14 points. They lost three out of their last four matches, defeating Floriana 2-1 in the other game In their last outing, they lost 1-3 to Gzira. Gudja, on the other hand, share the second place from bottom with Santa Lucia on 10 points, six ahead of bottom-placed Sliema Wanderers. However after suffering five consecutive defeats, Gudja returned to winning ways last week, defeating Mosta 3-0.

In the first round, Sirens defeated Gudja 1-0.
