Narrow win puts Hamrun in second place

An own goal early in the second half handed Hamrun Spartans a narrow win over rivals Valletta at the National Stadium on Monday. A win which enables them to leapfrog the Citizens, Birkirkara and Floriana to move second in the BOV Premier League table, seven points behind leaders Hibernians.

There was hardly any goalmouth action during the first half but in the second half, the game came to life. Caio Prado concluded a solo effort which ended just wide on the 56th minute and two minutes later, Luke Gambin had a fine shot from the edge of the area which was partially saved by Guarnone and Franklin Sasere’s conclusion, off the rebound, was deflected into a corner.

The Spartans took the lead on the 59th minute when off a Faissal El Bakhtaoui corner from the left, Haris Dilaver headed the ball back past goalkeeper Guarnone for an own goal.

Five minutes from time, the Citizens almost notched the equaliser but substitute Lucas Campos was unlucky to hit the upright with a shot from the edge of the area.
