BOV Challenge League: Pieta’ held by St. Andrews; Naxxar, San Gwann return to winning ways

Pieta’ Hotspurs missed out on the chance of joining Zebbug Rangers on top Group B of the BOV Challenge League after being held in a goalless draw by St. Andrews at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday.

Zebbug lead the way with 23 points, followed by Pieta’ on 21, Tarxien 20, Marsa 17, Fgura and Qrendi 16, Swieqi 15, St. Andrews 13, Senglea 11, Mgarr 8 and Luqa 7.

In Group A, Naxxar Lions bounced back from recent disappointing results with a dramatic 1-0 win over St. George’s at the Victor Tedesco Stadium thanks to a goal five minutes in added time by Ryan Gilmour Cassar.

Zejtun Corinthians maintained the challenge for promotion with a 4-0 win over Rabat Ajax at the Centenary Srtaduum thanks to goals Renan Sgaria Farias on the 16th and Gilbert Martin on the 31st. Samba Tounkara increased the lead on the 66th and five minutes later, David Xuereb scored the fourth goal.

San Gwann returned to winning ways as they defeated Lija Athletic 4-1 at the Centenary Stadium. Dale Mifsud put San Gwann ahead on the 20th and Sjaak Kuyper doubled the score on the 40th. Lydon Micallef pulled one back on the 43rd but goals by Luca Mallia on the 62nd and Nezar Abouhaisa on the 76th sealed the issue for San Gwann.

Naxxar Lions lead the way with 28 points, followed by Pembroke on 27, Zejtun 23, Lija and Melita 18, Marsaxlokk 16, San Gwann and Mqabba 13, Vittoriosa 10, Rabat 9 and St. George’s 4.
