BOV National Amateur League: First defeat for Gharghur

Leaders Gharghur suffered their first defeat in Group A of the BOV National Amateur League after suffering a dramatic 1-2 defeat to Xghajra Tornados at the Sirens Stadium on Saturday.

Ikechukwu Igwemeke put Gharghur ahead on the 47th but Andre Mallia equalised on the 64th and the same player notched the winner five minutes in added time.

Kalkara United also dropped important points as they were held in a 2-2 draw by Ghaxaq at the Luxol Stadium.

Clive Fenech handed Ghaxaq the lead on the 53rd but Cedric Zahra equalised on the hour and Joao Azambuja Studart Orban made it 2-1 for Kalkara on the 73rd. However Clive Fenech restored equilibrium in added time.

Gharghur lead the way with 21 points, followed by Kalkara on 17, Birzebbuga 15, Attard 13, Xghajra 12, Msida 11, Dingli 10, Siggiewi 7, Ta’ Xbiex and Ghaxaq 5. Attard had nine points deducted.

In Group B, Mtarfa moved joint-second thanks to a narrow win over neighbours Mdina Knights at the Luxol Stadium thanks to a goal by Dylan Mifsud on the 67th.

On the other hand, bottom-placed Kirkop United registered their first win, defeating Qormi 3-1 at the Sirens Stadium. Nicholai Falzon handed Qormi the lead on the 15th but Lincoln Micallef equalised a minute later and then scored on the 26th and 32nd to complete a hat-trick and hand Kirkop the three points.

Marsaskala lead the way with 22 points, followed by Zurrieq and Mtarfa on 19, Zabbar 13, Mdina and Mellieha 9, Sta. Venera 7, Qormi 6 and Kirkop 5.
