Floriana face Birkirkara test in bid to close in on Hibernians

Floriana will be aiming for a win on Sunday as they take on Birkrkara in one of the three BOV Premier League matches in programme on Saturday. A win which would enable them to close in on leaders Hibernians.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Gzira United face Valletta in a clash between two of the three teams sharing third place together with Balzan.

The Maroons returned to winning ways on Tuesday as they beat Sliema Wanderers 3-1 after earning just one point from the previous two matches when they lost to Hibernians and were held in a draw by Santa Lucia. Valletta, on the other hand, suffered three consecutive defeats, losing to Hamrun, Balzan and rivals Floriana.

In the first round, Gzira defeated Valletta 2-0.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 16:00, Sirens take on Santa Lucia.

Santa Lucia lie second from bottom on 11 points, six behind Gudja and one behind Mosta while Sirens are currently eighth on 19 points, just one behind the three teams in fifth place – Balzan, Gzira and Valletta. Santa Lucia, who are yet to appoint a new coach to replace Oliver Spiteri, have gone five matches without a win, losing 0-3 to neighbours Gudja on Wednesday. Sirens, on the other hand, collected five points from their last three matches thanks to a draw with Gudja, a 3-2 win over Mosta and an impressive 1-1 draw with Hibernians on Tuesday.

In the first round, Sirens defeated Santa Lucia 3-1.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 18:00, Floriana take on Birkirkara.

The Greens lie second, seven points behind Hibernians, one ahead of Hamrun and three ahead of the Stripes who have a game in hand. Therefore while Floriana will be aiming to win to cut the gap with the Paolites to just four points, Birkirkara know that with a win over the Greens they would join them in second place and considering Wednesday’s clash with Hamrun Spartans, they could possibly become the main challengers for Hibernians by moving second on 29 points.

The Greens are unbeaten in four matches following a draw with Hibernians and wins over Sana Lucia, Sliema and Valletta. They won five out of the last seven matches. The Stripes had won just one game from the previous six matches before meeting Balzan on Wednesday, turning defeat into victory with three goals between the 86th and 95th to earn three precious points.

In the first round, Birkirkara and Floriana shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
