Sirens edge past Santa Lucia to move fifth

Sirens moved fifth in the BOV Premier League, one point ahead of Gzira United and Valletta and two ahead of Balzan as they defeated Santa Lucia 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday,

The St. Paul’s Bay side therefore registered a fourth consecutive positive result to maintain the challenge for a top-six finish. Santa Lucia, on the other hand, remain second from bottom. They could consider themselves a bit unlucky to leave empty-handed considering the number of chances they created..

Assistant coach Brian Chetcuti led Santa Lucia following the resignation of Oliver Spiteri. Sirens, on the other hand, had Henrique Marcelino Motta making his debut.

Santa Lucia took the lead on 27 minutes when a pass by Alan da Silva was deflected and Diego Albanese headed the ball in the direction of the goalkeeper but was intercepted by Vito Plut who lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Jonathan Debono.

Two minutes later, Sirens levelled matters thanks to Vitor Vieira who hit low past Christopher Farrugia following an assist by Kemar Reid from the left.

Sirens notched the winner on the 66th when a shot by Vieira was blocked by Liam Mckay and Carlo Zammit Lonardelli hit home past the Santa Lucia goalkeeper.
