Floriana target win to stay close to leaders

Floriana aim to return to winning ways on Sunday as they take on Balzan in one of the three matches in programme. Birkirkara take on Gudja United and Valletta face Sirens in the other two matches.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 11:30, Floriana will be all out for the three points in the clash with Balzan.

Lying seven points behind the Paolites, the Greens cannot afford any result other than a win. They are unbeaten in six matches but were held in a 2-2 draw by Hamrun Spartans last week. Balzan are currently eighth on 20 points and are desperate for points in their bid to secure a top six finish. They earned just one point from their last four matches, suffering back-to-back defeats to Sliema and Mosta in their last two outings.

The Greens could have new signings Andreas Vella and Brian Gimenez in squad but Oualid El Hasni is suspended. The Citizens could have new signing Luis Murillo making his debut but Jean Borg is suspended.

In the first round, Floriana defeated Balzan 2-1.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Birkirkara face Gudja United.

The Stripes share third place with Hamrun, three points behind Floriana while Gudja share the eighth place with Balzan. Birkirkara returned to winning ways last week as they defeated Gzira 1-0 after a defeat to Floriana and a draw with Hamrun. Gudja, on the other hand, claimed nine points from their last three outings, defeating Santa Lucia, Sliema and Valletta. They suffered just one loss from the last six matches.

In the first round, Birkirkara defeated Gudja 2-0.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 18:00, Valletta take on Sirens.

Led by new coach Danilo Doncic, the Citizens hope for a change of fortunes after disappointing in recent outings, They collected just two points from the last six matches in draws with Birkirkara and Gzira, losing to Hamrun, Balzan, Floriana and Gudja. They are currently seventh on 21 points, one behind Sirens. For the St. Paul’s Bay side, a narrow defeat to Sliema last week saw them lose track after a good run during whcih they won three out of the previous six matches, earning another two points in draws.

Jacob Walker serves a one-match ban for Sirens but Renato Neto should also make his first appearance.

In the first round, Valletta defeated Sirens 3-1.
