Hibernians hope to regain top spot

Hibernians will be hoping to regain the top spot, at least temporarily, as they take on Balzan in one of the three BOV Premier League matches in programme on Saturday. Other precious points will be at stake as Gudja United face Gzira United and Mosta face Valletta.

With two matches to go for each team, Floriana, Hibernians and Birkirkara are sure of playing among the top six while Santa Lucia and Sliema Wanderers will be playing among the bottom six.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 14:00, Gudja United face Gzira United.

One point separates the two teams with Gzira joint-fifth on 27 points and Gudja seventh on 26. Gudja lost two out of the last four matches to Birkirkara and Floriana but these were the only points they dropped since January as they won the other five matches. Gzira, on the other hand, are coming from two successive defeats as they lost 3-4 to Mosta last week after losing to Floriana the week before.

In the first round, Gzira defeated Gudja 3-2.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 16:00, Hibernians take on Balzan.

The Paolites lie one point behind leaders Floriana and a win over Balzan would put them back on top. After losing to Birkirkara 2-3, Hibs only managed to earn a point in a draw with Hamrun last week. Balzan, on the other hand, ended a disappointing run of five successive defeats with a 2-1 win over Sirens. Although they are currently third from bottom on 23 points, a win would keep alive hopes of securing a top-six spot.

In the first round, Hibs defeated Balzan 2-1.

At the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 18:00, Mosta face Valletta in a direct clash between two teams sharing the eighth place on 24 points.

The Blues claimed maximum points from the last two matches, defeating Sliema 1-0 and Gzira 4-3. The win over Gzira was also the fourth win in five matches for Mosta. Valletta, on the other hand, defeated Sliema 1-0 last week. This was only the first win for the Citizens since November after losing seven out of the last nine matches.

In the first round, Valletta defeated Mosta 3-1.
