Gzira edge closer to top six spot

Gzira United moved an important step towards securing a top-six finish as they defeated Gudja United 2-1 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Saturday. A win which puts Darren Abdilla’s side in fourth place on 30 points, one ahead of Hamrun and three ahead of Sirens, who both have a game in hand.

Gudja remain on 26 points and risk falling further down the table, considering that Valletta and Mosta who lie one point behind them face each other later on Saturday.

Gzira took the lead on 27 minutes when off a cross by Jefferson de Assis from the right, Toni Kolega slotted the ball past goalkeeper Glenn Zammit.

Six minutes from the end of the first half, the Maroons doubled the score courtesy of Jefferson de Assis who pounced on a long through pass and avoided the challenge by Juan Bolanos, hitting low past Zammit.

Gudja pulled one back on the 70th thanks to a fine volley by substitute Llywelyn Cremona from inside the area which beat goalkeeper Zarkov.
