Early goal paves the way for comfortable Hamrun win

Hamrun Spartans joined Birkirkara in fourth place in the BOV Premier League as they defeated bottom-placed Sliema Wanderers 3-1 at the National Stadium on Friday.

For the Spartans, this was a fourth consecutive positive result following the draws with Sirens and Hibernians and the win over Santa Lucia. Sliema, on the other hand, suffer another defeat following last week’s draw with Birkirkara and now lie ten points behind the team just ahead of them in the table, Santa Lucia.

It took Hamrun just thirty nine seconds to forge ahead when following a good move on the right by Predrag Djordjevic and Juan Carlos Corbalan, Joseph Mbong beat goalkeeper David Cassar.

On the 18th minute, the Spartans doubled the score when off a cross by Mbong from the right, Franklin Sasere headed the ball down for Faissal El Bakhtaoui who hit home from close range.

Sliema pulled one back on the 56th when off a swift counter-attack, Jake Engerer served Jean Carlos Cloth Goncalves who beat Bonello with a diagonal shot from the right.

However six minutes later, Hamrun made it 3-1 thanks to a Franklin Sasere penalty after Joseph Mbong was brought down inside the area.
