Izibet FA Trophy: Hamrun through on penalties, Hibs struggle to beat Zejtun

Hamrun Spartans, Hibernians and Valletta joined Birkirkara, Floriana and Gzira United in the quarter-finals of the Izibet FA Trophy after they all registered in more matches from the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

At the National Stadium, Hamrun Spartans defeated Balzan on penalties following a goalless draw at the end of the ninety minutes and a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

In fact, it was deep into added time in the first half of extra-time that Hamrun, who had defeated Naxxar Lions 1-0 in the previous round, managed to take the lead through Faissal El Bakhtaoui but four minutes from the end of the second half of extra-time, Bojan Kaljevic equalised to level matters and force the penalty shoot-out.

Arthur Oyama scored for Hamrun, Milan Djuric scored for Balzan, Franklin Sasere scored for the Spartans but Milos Mijic hit the crossbar for Balzan. Joseph Mbong made it 4-2 for Hamrun and Kevin Alvin Daniels had his penalty saved by Bonello. Steve Borg scored for Hamrun to make it 5-2 and put them in the quarter-finals.

At the Hibernians Stadium, Hibernians came from behind to beat Challenge League side Zejtun Corinthians 2-1.

Samba Tounkara put Zejtun ahead one minute from the end of the first half but Jake Grech equalised on the 83rd minute and one minute from time, Hugo Filipe da Costa Oliveira notched the winner for Hibernians who had beaten Nadur Youngster 2-0 in the Round of 32.

At the Centenary Stadium, Valletta defeated Challenge League side Tarxien Rainbows 5-1.

Promise Oluwatobi Emmanuel David put the Citizens, who had defeated Marsaskala 5-0 in the previous round, ahead on the 5th minute and Eslit Sala doubled the score on the 27th. Saturday Nanapere pulled one back six minutes in the second half but Promise David made it 3-1 on the 62nd with Ivan Curjuric adding another on the 70th before Kevin Tulimieri made it 5-1 six minutes from time.
