Six players presented with Women’s Player of the Month awards

Amber Grech (Mġarr United), Celine Galea (Kirkop United), Monique Sultana (Raiders Lija), Alishia Sultana (Birkirkara) and Mtarfa duo Lorna Cassar and Dorienne Grech claimed the Women’s Player of the Month awards in the first part of the 2021/2022 campaign.

The six players representing five different clubs have received their accolades during an official presentation held by the Malta Football Association at the Trophies Lounge, on Wednesday.

Mġarr midfielder Grech, who is currently sidelined due to a long-term injury, was named player of the month for September/October. In those two months, Grech contributed with three goals in the opening three games of the season. She had scored one goal in Mġarr’s 2-0 victory against Raiders before grabbing a brace in the win against Mtarfa (7-0).

The November award was won by Kirkop’s captain, Celine Galea. The central defender led her team to straight wins in November, against San Ġwann (3-1) and Mtarfa (4-0), putting her name on the scoresheet in the latter game as well.

Raiders Lija’s captain Monique Sultana clinched the December award having helped her team to secure two victories in the final month of the year. She skippered the side in a 2-0 win against Kirkop while scoring a goal in the 11-0 win against Mtarfa.

League leaders Birkirkara had Alishia Sultana winning this award, having been named the best player for the month of January. The Malta international player scored an important goal for the Stripes in a 3-1 win against Raiders Lija a couple of months ago.

The February award was the only one shared by two players, in Mtarfa’s duo Dorienne Grech and Lorna Cassar – goalkeeper and club captain. Both players were involved in Mtarfa’s historic 1-0 win against San Ġwann which earned their club their maiden victory at senior level in the women’s game.

The MFA Women’s League will resume on April 19 to make space for the women’s national team as they will host Denmark and Italy U-23 in two international games.
