Hibs, Floriana cross swords in top-of-the-table clash

The top spot will be at stake on Saturday as Hibernians and Floriana cross swords in a top-of-the table clash at one of the three BOV Premier League matches in programme on Saturday. Meanwhile in wo matches from the Play-Out final round, Santa Lucia take on Sirens and Mosta face Balzan.

At the National Stadium, kick-off at 16:00, Hibernians and Floriana will be facing each other in a direct clash which could give an indication which way the Premier League title would be going.

The Paolites lead the way with 47 points, two ahead of Floriana. Until the direct clash between the two on March 12, the Greens were leading the way after winning nine out of the previous ten matches. However Hibernians, who had just suffered their first defeat three weeks earlier, losing 2-3 to Birkirkara and were then held in a goalless draw by Hamrun followed by a narrow win over Balzan, played a great game against Floriana, winning 4-1 to take the top spot.

Floriana lost 0-1 to Gzira United last week but Hibs were also beaten 1-2 by Hamrun Spartans and therefore two points continue to separate the two teams.

The Paolites could not count on the suspended Dunstan Vella.

Apart from the 4-1 win for Hibernians in the second round, in the first round, the two teams had shared the spoils in a goalless draw.

In the first match at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 15:00, Santa Lucia take on Sirens.

Four wins from the last five matches enabled Santa Lucia to climb up the table and now share the third place in the Play-Out table with Mosta on 25 points, two ahead of Balzan who are currently second from bottom and just two behind Sirens. Sirens, on the other hand, lost their last four matches and have now gone six matches without a win. In their last outing, Sirens lost 0-3 to Valletta and Santa Lucia defeated Balzan 3-0.

In the previous rounds, Sirens defeated Santa Lucia 3-1 and 2-1 but in the Izibet FA Trophy, Santa Lucia had eliminated Sirens, beating them 4-1.

Santa Lucia could not count on the suspended Dexter Xuereb.

In the second match at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 18:15, Mosta cross swords with Balzan in a clash.

Two points separate the two teams with Mosta sharing the third place from bottom with Santa Lucia, two points ahead of Balzan. Mosta are coming from back-to-back defeats to Gudja and Sliema, earning just a point from the previous match with Valletta. Balzan, on the other hand, lost eight out of the last nine matches.

Mosta defeated Balzan 2-1 and 3-2 in the previous rounds.

For Balzan, Neil Frendo serves a one-match ban.
