Hibernians one point away from being crowned champions

Hibernians need just one point from the clash with Birkirkara at the National Stadium on Sunday, kick-off at 15:00, to claim the thirteenth championship in the history of the club. In another match from the BOV Premier League Top Six final round, Gzira United face Gudja United at the National Stadium. Meanwhile at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, Santa Lucia face Sliema Wanderers in the Play-Out final round.

Following Floriana’s third successive goalless draw, the Paolites lie three points ahead of the Greens and therefore a point from the remaining two matches is enough for Stefano Sanderra’s side.

The 2-0 win over Gudja was the first win for the Paolites in the Top Six final round following a 1-2 defeat to Hamrun and a goalless draw with Floriana. Birkirkara, on the other hand, are currently fourth on 41 points, one behind Hamrun and need a positive result in order to maintain the battle for third place and a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League this summer.

The Paolites are yet to beat Birkirkara this season as the Stripes registered a 3-2 win in the second round following a 1-1 draw in the first round.

Meanwhile in the second match at the National Stadium, kick-off at 18:15, Gzira United take on Gudja United.

A win is a must for the Maroons to maintain alive chances of securing a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League. They are currently fifth on 37 points, five behind Hamrun and four behind Birkirkara. Their only chance to move in third place is to beat Gudja on Sunday and Hibs next weekend, hoping that Birkirkara fail to win on Sunday and that the direct clash between Hamrun and Birkirkara next week ends in a draw. In that case, a decider would be necessary.

Gzira lost 0-2 to Hamrun in their last outing, following a win over Floriana and a draw with Birkirkara. Gudja, on the other hand, lost 0-3 to Birkirkara, defeated Hamrun 1-0 and lost 0-2 to Hibernians

The Maroons defeated Gudja 3-2 and 2-1 in the previous rounds. In the FA Trophy, Gzira defeated Gudja 3-1.

Meanwhile in the Play-Out final round, Santa Lucia cannot afford any result other than a win as they take on Sliema Wanderers at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, kick-off at 16:00.

A 3-2 win over Sirens put Balzan on level points with Santa Lucia and therefore taking maximum points from this clash is of utmost importance for Giovanni Tedesco’s side before next weekend’s final matches as Santa Lucia face Valletta and Balzan take on Sliema.

In the final round, Santa Lucia defeated Balzan 3-0 and drew 2-2 with Sirens and 1-1 with Mosta. Sliema, on the other hand, defeated Mosta 1-0 but lost 1-3 to Valletta and 0-5 to Sirens.

In the previous rounds, the two teams shared spoils in draws – 0-0 and 1-1.
